About our Gi

A gi is the standard uniform for studying Japanese martial arts such as Judo, Karate or Aikido. Judo gis tend to be heavier since the art involves grabbing and pulling by the participants. Karate gis, since they aren't subjected to such heavy use tend to be lighter.  For Aikido, a Judo-gi is recommended but a karate gi is also acceptable.

Gorilla Gi are cut specifically to fit the American Martial Arts practitioner.  Our gi feature longer sleeves to accomodate the typical American body style.

Traditionally, gi come in two "cuts" European or Japanese.  European cut gi tend to be tight in the torso, but with longer arms.  Japanese cut gi have more room in the torso, but with shorter arms.  While both of these can be acceptable, American body styles trend towards larger torsos with longer arms, resulting in a poor fit no matter which of the typical cuts are chosen.  If a uniform shrinks when washed, it can become not only uncomfortable to wear, but also unsuitable for tournament wear.  If a gi is deemed inelligible, the competitor is faced with the prospect of having to immediately replace the gi or forfeit their place in the tournament.

Gorilla Gi are designed to better fit the American body style.  Cut more generously in the torso, our gi also feature an additional 20% length in the arms, ensuring a more optimum fit and reducing the chances that your gi will be disqualified by Tournament Judges.

Things to consider when choosing your judogi:

Currently, Gorilla Gi offers 2 weights of gi in your choice of color.  We offer bleached white and blue practice gi in the 450 gram weight "single" weave style. We also offer bleached white and blue competition gi in the 900 gram weight "double" weave style.  Please visit our catalog to place your gi order.

Single Weave

This term indicates the general construction of the uniform. Single weave uniforms are typically lighter than a double weave and are typically worn by beginner or intermediate students, or those practicing in a hot climate.

Double Weave:

"Double weave" uniforms are not necessarily double in thickness, however they are generally heavier than single weave gi.  Double weave unforms also feature reinforcements in high-wear areas.  These type of gi are favored by competition level practitioners as well as intermediate and advanced students.  We highly recommend that if you are a serious practitioner of your sport, that you purchase a double weave gi.
